cheers for the suggestion Chet, but doing a full reload hasn't fixed the empty device list.

that was Firefox 2.0.0.11 on Windows - i've also tried a few other browsers... on the Mac, in Firefox 2.0.0.11 and in Camino 1.5.4 (both Gecko based) --- but still no dice.

as this system is on a vm in a live system, i can't fiddle with it too much until at the weekend, when i will be able clone the vm and download it to examine. 

i will be able to try deleting each device in turn and see if i can pin the problem down to a particular device entry.

i will let you know how i get on - if anyone has any suggestions in the meanwhile, please chime in!
