We had similar issues with our installation: ~ 500 devices (+ interfaces + routes), few hundred events per day etc. Clicking on 'Networks' required a few minutes to finally the actual page got rendered... I hacked getGenericStatus() but this was only a solution for the time being. Finally :) we configured the MySQL server for that amount of data and the 6 GB of installed memory (i.e., my-huge.cnf). Now it's working quite fine.
