I answered my own question about whether I need to use ssh by re-reading your README.txt a few times.  I had mis-read this:
"The VmwareEsxDf will model the filesystem using ssh
but for the performance I will use snmp."  and thought that using ssh was optional.  I understand now that SSH is required for the modeling and that SNMP is used for performance data gathering.  I have it working now with my changes to the vmware-esx.sh vdf output parsing.
